Announcement of New Principal - Mr. Michael Maziarz

Welcome to Mr. Michael Maziarz, newly appointed principal of Pathways Academy of Technology & Design. Mr. Maziarz was the School Governance Council's top candidate. He comes to us after many years of being the principal at Hartford High, and he has a strong familiarity with our NAF model of work-based learning and project-based learning.

Mr. Maziarz has focused the last 13 plus years of educational work to the transformation of urban schools in Hartford, CT. He was a teacher at Hartford Public High School, and later the Dean of Students at two academies. For five years he was the Principal of the Academy of Engineering and Green Technology, and for the past year the Executive Principal of all three schools on the Hartford Public High School campus. Mr. Maziarz has accelerated the school's National Academy Foundation Model by developing an Advisory Board of local business partners aligned to the school's theme that has been nationally recognized, infusing a rigorous project-based learning curriculum, and providing students with paid internships and work-based learning experiences at partner companies like United Technologies, Pratt & Whitney, and CBIA.

Under his leadership, the school has been nationally recognized for its student-centered project-based learning work, has received the United States Department of Education Green Ribbon Award, the CT Green Leaf Award, the Construction Institute Special Industry Award for student-lead projects, acknowledged the past three year's by the President and CEO of the Connecticut Business and Industry Association for its exemplar work in preparing students for the future workforce, and has hosted annual Regional Robotics Competitions for their success as one of the leading programs in the region.

Mr. Maziarz has presented nationally at multiple National Academy Foundation (NAF) Conferences as an exemplar for project-based learning, internship and work-based learning programs, and on developing Advisory Boards and partnerships with high level local, national, and global business and industry companies. Mr. Maziarz has presented on on each of these areas at WGBH's National Forum on STEM Media and Climate Education, The Center for the Advancement of STEM Education Conference at Bridgewater University, The Connecticut Council for Education Reform Conference, on Engaging the Disengaged Learner, and the National Association for Workforce Improvement Conference, amongst many others. Mr. Maziarz has been able to develop and grow these programs, practices, and strategies through his passion to create a family environment promoting a positive climate and culture, along with improving the quality of instruction through strong collaborative teams and student-centered rigorous and relevant learning.
