Learning Something New:
The 2nd Annual Diversity Day at Pathways Academy
The 2nd annual Diversity Day was held at Pathways Academy of Technology & Design on Thursday, April 6th, 2017. Organized by English teacher, Ms. Chelsea Usher, along with the PTO and a team of student ambassadors, the overall mission of the day is to expose students to something new - from different lifestyles, religions, professions, and more.
The entire student body chose three sessions from a list of nearly unique and engaging 30 presentations. Examples of sessions included, "Stand Out with Your Own Personal Brand" with Kellen Savage, "Immigration & Human Rights" with Sana Shah, "Let's Talk about Race" with Jason Fredlund and Derek Hall, "Multiculturalism & Identity" with Former Mayor Pedro Segarra, and so much more.
Both students and staff at Pathways had an overwhelming positive response to the 2nd annual Diversity Day. Sophomore, NaThalia Medina, said she would recommend her sessions to her friends for next year. She said, "the sessions that I attended really motivated me and inspired me in a way to help me better myself." When asked what he would do differently for next year's conference, 9th grader, Nestor Garcia said, "Nothing. This was a very joyful experience. I got to meet a lot of great people and found about the kinds of things they do. I can't wait to do it again."
Ms. Usher's goal this year through Diversity Day was to make the conference bigger, more informative, and more student-driven. It was a job well done, and a specaturlar day of learning for the entire school community. Thank you Ms. Usher, student ambassadors, PTO members, and staff for their support in making this day very successful.
