These scholarships are posted here for the use of our seniors. When looking over a scholarship, read the qualifying rules, then pay careful attention to the application dates. If you need help please contact our Guidance department.

The book award is a one time grant in the amount of $500.00. 
Applications are reviewed and selected based on the following:

  • Financial need, academic performance, essay
  • Involvement in extra-curricular, church, and/or community activities
  • Must be a Hartford resident ranked in the top two-thirds of class with at least a “C” average

The Connecticut Association of Educational Professionals (CAEOP) will be awarding one $750.00 scholarship to a deserving high school senior who continues his/her educational career in the field of Business.

Criteria: 
•       Intention to pursue a business and/or secretarial career 
•       Financial need
•       Scholastic ability
•       Extracurricular activity
•       Leadership
•       Civic Involvement

Applications are due to guidance by February 17, 2010. Final applications for the scholarship close February 26, 2010.

Tenth annual essay contest on the topic “The Trouble with Texting” is available to high school students.  Contest winner will receive a $3,000 savings bond and 2 runners-up will receive $1,500 savings bonds.  Entry must not exceed 1000 words.  Contest packet (topic hypothetical, application materials, rules & judging criteria) on the CT Bar’s website:  www.cbf.ctbar.org.

Applications are due to guidance by February 12, 2010. Final applications for the scholarship close March 5, 2010.

Big Y awards over 300 scholarships each year totaling more than $250,000.   To be eligible a student’s permanent residence or school must be located within Western Mass, Central Mass & Norfolk County Mass or the state of CT.  Please refer to application for further eligibility requirements.   Visit website for more info: www.bigy.com.  Along with application provide: unofficial copy of transcript grades, scores, 2 letters of recommendation, resume.

  Applications are due to guidance 2 weeks prior to scholarship deadline. Please refer to individual scholarships for their deadlines.

$1,000 scholarships available to all eligible high school seniors with a GPA of 2.5 or higher, works part time a minimum of 10 hrs per week or 40 weeks per year, active in community, demonstrate financial need and will be attending 2yr/4yr college/university or vocational/technical school in the fall. All student athletes are eligible regardless of the sport they are engaged in.   Student must be a high school senior or be attending a post secondary institute.  Essay submissions, “How has your participation in sports affected the person you are becoming?” must be sent to athleticawards@bigsunathletics.com.

College scholarships of up to $5,000 each are awarded annually to students selected on the basis of school and community activities, academic achievement, and financial need. Students must attend an accredited institution of higher education in the state of Connecticut. They must be in the top 40 percent of their high school class or maintain a 2.5 grade point average or higher in college.  www.sbmfoundation.org

Scholarship opportunity available to all high school juniors & seniors as well as all students (ages 16 & 30) currently registered in any accredited postsecondary institution.  Submit essay “What do you see as the long-term impact of our current recession on the average family?  How might it affect their future decisions?”  (between 500-1000 words) to scholars@abbottandfenner.com .  Visit website:

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria: Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Legal Resident of the United States. Cannot be a Walmart Stores, Inc. Associate; the dependent of a Walmart Stores, Inc. Associate; or the dependent of a Walmart Stores, Inc. Board of Directors member as of March 29, 2010.

Must be a high school senior graduating between August 1, 2009 and July 31, 2010. Home school diplomas and GED equivalency certificates are eligible with the same completion date requirement.

Must have a cumulative high school grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4-point unweighted scale, and have taken either the ACT or SAT test.

Must plan to enroll for fall 2010 as a freshman at a two-year or four-year college or university that is located in the U.S. and is accredited and listed on the official website of the U.S. Department of Education

Must have financial need and be able to demonstrate the need with required documents. (Note: Students with other funds that pay entirely for tuition, books, fees, and on-campus room and board are ineligible.) http://www.act.org/walmart/community/

Bob’s & American Red Cross have teamed up to offer a scholarship program to CT graduating high school seniors who will be continuing their education at a 2/4 year accredited college/university or professional trade school.  Must be active participant in high school blood drive.   Please read & view all pertinent info at:

CT Sports Writers’ Alliance will award a $1,000 scholarship to a secondary school senior in CT who plans to attend a four-year college with the aim of pursuing a career in sports journalism.  Requirements:   essay, resume, transcript, ACT/SAT scores, letter of recommendation, sample writings. www.ctsportswriters.org

The Portuguese Foundation has its scholarship application form online at its website, http://www.pfict.org..
The requirements of the scholarship program are as follows:

  • Student must be of Portuguese Ancestry
  • Be either a U.S. Citizen or a Permanent Resident
  • Be a resident of the State of Connecticut
  • Be applying for, or currently in College
  • Be a full time student in an undergraduate degree conferring program or a part time student in a Master's or Doctorate Program
  • Cannot have previously received more than four Foundation scholarships

(Hispanic American Commitment to Educational Resources)- open to graduating high school seniors who have at least one parent of Hispanic descent.  Please refer to www.rmhc.org

The Governor’s Coalition for Youth with Disabilities is accepting applications for the 2010 scholarship program for Connecticut’s graduating seniors with disabilities.

Eligibility Criteria:
•       Is currently a graduating high school senior planning to attend post-secondary education
•       A permanent resident of Connecticut
•       Have a disability under Special Education Law or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973

Each year the Hartford Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta selects three African-American young women to receive a $2000 scholarship based on the applicant’s academic achievement and community involvement. In addition to receiving the initial award, scholarship recipients enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited four year college who maintain a 3.0 GPA can apply for a renewal award.

The Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship Fund offers college scholarships to students from New England with financial need who displays academic excellence, strong citizenship and character, and a desire to make a meaningful contribution to society.

Applicants should: Have a GPA 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale), Be enrolled in a demanding course of study and demonstrate skilled writing ability

The AXA Achievement Community Scholarship program offers $2,000 college scholarships to high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their activities in school, the community or the workplace.

The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating Senior from an accredited high school in the State of Connecticut who also has been accepted and will attend the University of Connecticut.  The student must have a demonstrated record of community service.

This scholarship is not a traditional scholarship focused on rewarding academic achievement and financial need. Its specific goal is to reward and encourage innovative and creative problem solving.We offer up to $20,000 (up to $5000 per year for four years) for exceptionally innovative and creative high school juniors & seniors, & college freshmen
Apply for this scholarship if you are . . .

  • a student who has solved artistic, scientific, or technical problems in new or unusual ways
  • a student who has come up with a distinctive solution to problems faced by your school, community or family
  • a student who has created a new group, organization, or institution that serves an important need

Graduating high school seniors with a strong interest in pursuing a career in business, financial services or information technology can apply for the MassMutual Scholars Program.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Resident of Hampden County, MA or Hartford County, CT.
  • Graduating high school senior with a strong interest in pursuing a career in business, financial services or information technology.
  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better.
  • Students must attend an accredited 2 or 4 year college / university in the states of Massachusetts or Connecticut; or Bryant University, Smithfield, RI, or Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Troy, NY.
  • The online Community Foundation Application is required for consideration.  Paper or printed PDF applications off our website will not be considered.

The Wall Street Journal Classroom Edition Internship Stories Scholarship

Who:  Students who participated in an internship during the 2008-2009 school year or during the summer of 2009.  This program asks students to describe the impact of their internship experience through the use of narrative visuals.  Three students will be awarded $2000.00.

Kelly IT Resources Scholarship

Who:  This scholarship opportunity available only to NAF Academy students, Pathways students qualify.  This program awards two $2,500.00 scholarships.

Horticultural Scholarship Award

$5,000 grant, per year- renewable for up to four years of study, to a Connecticut resident, graduating high school in spring 2010 majoring in the field of Horticulture.  The applicant must be accepted into a course of study beneficial to the Horticultural industry.  This includes, but not limited to:  Ornamental Horticulture, Landscape Design, Nursery Management or Greenhouse Management.

Howard Jennings Scholarship

This is a one time $500 scholarship for a CT student (high school or college) that has been accepted by UCONN, majoring in plant science/horticulture.

The College Club of Hartford is offering a limited number of $1,500 scholarships to qualified senior students who will be applying to accredited two and four-year colleges this year.

 

In awarding these we are primarily interested in scholarship record, character, leadership, and financial need.  Awardees should place in the top 10% of the class.

The 100 Years of Women Scholarship Fund honors a current UCONN undergraduate student (who will be enrolled for the Fall 2010 semester) or high school senior planning to enroll in the University of Connecticut who demonstrated a commitment to women’s issues through service to their community of school.  The scholarship award ranges from $250 to $1,000.

Award Amount:  $250.00

 

Eligibility:  A deserving male high school student who has been accepted and plans on attending the University of Connecticut, Storrs in the fall 2010.  This young man should be from and underrepresented ethnic group and has demonstrated through his community activism, academics, and extracurricular activities his eagerness to strive to be the best he can in pursuing a bachelors degree at the university.

The (CAWP) is pleased to announce that is offering Scholarship Awards to be used by students to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice.  Applicants must meet the following guidelines and criteria:

  • Applicants must be graduating from an accredited high school in 2010
  • Applicants (male or female) must be applying to a criminal justice program
  • Completed CAWP scholarship application
  • High school transcript and one recommendation letter
  • A personal essay of 200-250 words telling why the candidate should be selected
  • A copy of a completed FAFSA(SAR) report

The scholarship is awarded to a New England High school senior who has made a meaningful contribution to animal protection over a significant period of time.  The award consists of tuition assistance in the amount of $2,000.  Eligible applicants are sought from New England public, private, parochial and vocational schools.

 

Applications should be written in letter form and should include a narrative of the student’s achievements in animal protection, as well as a discussion of his or her attitude toward animals.

The American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) seeks to help increase the number of African Americans and other underrepresented minorities in energy related fields.  The Connecticut area chapter intends to award scholarships ($2,500 each) to eligible students in the Connecticut area.

 

Eligibility

  • Have, minimally, an overall “B” academic average and a “B” average in mathematics and science courses (3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale)
  • Be graduating high school senior who has applied to one or more accredited college/university
  • Plan to major in business, engineering, mathematics, technology, or science fields.
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Be a member of one of the underrepresented minority groups

Application deadline is 03/19/2010.

Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc will be awarding graduating female high school students in the Greater Hartford area who plan to major in business or another profession.  The amount of scholarship ranges from $400 to $1,000 depending on the number of winners chosen by the sorority.

Requirements:  Applicants must be a resident of Hartford and a senior in a Hartford High School planning to enter the teaching profession.  Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic achievement, financial need and completed applications.
